You still have time to visit the Venice Biennale, until november 26 th exactly. We were there one month ago and I had few big crushes I wanted to share with you. Let’s start with the Giardini and my top 5 pavillions :

1°  Switzerland : the  pavilion is a tribute to Giacometti who actually never represented his country in the Biennale. The installation/ movie made Birchler and Hubbard moved us so deeply ! It’s about the forgotten love of the sculptor called Flora Mayo, which is also an edifying destiny of a woman artist coming from USA at the beginning of the century, thanks to the support of her family, until the crisis of 1929 ruined her artistic hopes and life… Nothing remains from her creations except a photograph of a wonderful bust she made of Giaco…I’m still haunted by her story.

Corea :  Glad to discover Cody Choi, an enfant terrible of contemporary art. Subversive,  transgressive, and meaningful.

France : The day we visited the Giardini was really  magical as Nigel Godrich the producer of Radio head came to the pavilion-studio for a string session recording and the artist Xavier Veilhan was there too. Creation in motion.

Austria : up to you to activate famous Erwin Wurm one minute sculpture.  Hilarious !

5° Belgium  : the somptuous dark and mysterious images by Dirk Braeckman mesmerized me. I admire greatly their pictorial quality.

The german pavilion is out of competition if I could say as the excellent artist Anne Imhof choose to present an impressive live performance for the opening and ..nothing remains for it. Go and see it nevertheless.

pics coming soon…

In the Arsenale, my favorite works were :

Julien Charriere

Michelle Stuart

Ernesto Neto

Leonor Antunes

Kader Attia

Alicia Kwade

more text soon 😉

Don’t miss  also these 2 pavilions in the Arsenale :

China

and the Georgian one  with Vajiko Chachkhiani . Everyone is talking about his outstanding installation : a  house where a non stoppable inside rain will ruin everything…

Big crush also for the nigeran pavilion,  located in  Scoletta dei Battioro e dei Tiraoro,  a building from early 18th century, that was once home to Venice’s gold thread and gold leaf guild. Moreover this is the first participation of this country for the Biennale. Peju Alatise ‘s installation, evoking a yoruba tale is a must see ! Formal perfection and moving background with an actual echo of african female condition.

The best exhibitions to see in Venice  :

1° Palazzo Fortuny and Axel Vervoordt choice. A must attend rendez-vous , the true spirit of  connoisseurs, but, alas , the last edition… so Enjoy !!

2° Dont miss, next to Santa Maria dei Miracoli : Palazzo Soranzo van Axel,  a new palazzo ,just refurbished , with a group show curated by Pouchkine museum. 2 excellent artworks to see there :

  • a magnetic video by David Claerbout about a strange wood.
  • an impressive sound installation by Yri Kalendarev that you can activate

3° Prada Foundation

more text and picas coming soon 😉

What to see in Paris in january ? My Top 3 shows :

Posted in Art, art advisor, art and culture, art gallery, contemporary art, Paris on January 20, 2016 by ParisDeluxe&Arty

The beginning of the year is very exciting in Paris ! We have few great shows that just started, I introduce you my favorite :

1.Derrick Adams at Anne de Villepoix ( http://www.annedevillepoix.com )

Catchy and seductive, playful and dynamic, Derrick Adam’s works made of a knowledgeable technique of collage and strong sens of eurythmy and construction inherited from art history, talk also about a serious subject : the question of afro-american identity and its presentations, especially in media.

2. Gideon Rubin at Karsten Greve ( http://www.galerie-karsten-greve.com )

Either facing us or back turned,  the model won’t reveal her face, nevertheless we recognize the wife of Manet in white on left (original at Orsay museum). I’m a fan of the oil/ cardboards series After the masters in small scale. His style is synthetic and allusive   without being rigid or stiff. Thanks to his mastery of medium he achieves to render beauty and sensuality.

3. Steve McQueen at Marian Goodman gallery ( http://www.mariangoodman.com )

A powerful neon light installation covering the whole wall with the demand Remember me  by different handwritings  welcome the visitor in the first room on ground level, while downstairs two movies, projected on double side screen, talks about life and death.   “I want to put the public in a situation where everyone becomes acutely sensitive to themselves, to their body and respiration,” says Steve McQueen.

Tired of white cube style gallery ? Looking for mystery, sensuality and new territories to explore ?…

Well, Da End gallery with its Cabinet of Curiosities is for you ! A gallery with a soul-created by japonese gifted photographer Satoshi Saikusa and his exquisite wife Diem Quynh- dark as dandy secret room, with little hooks and cranny,  filled with sculptures, paintings, drawings, installations,  a universal story about the cycle of life on Earth is unveiled. Growths, mutations, alterations: all the successive evolutions due to the natural course of things, but also to the action of man, are depicted both in a literal or allegorical way.

The display and gathering is echoing these famous Cabinet of Marvels, also called Kunst Kamer, created by intellectual and artists in Europe,  from 16th century to 18th century, when people started to discover new worlds and expected to find mermaids, griffons, unicorns…Using a system of classifications, from Naturalia-beauty from nature-to Artificiala-artefacts- including Mirabilia -exceptional pieces like Ostrich eggs or tortoise shell-and scientifica – instrument of world knowledge-they wanted to recreate at home the splendors of the world concentrated in a small space, propitious to meditation on life and creation and stimulating imagination.

What a pleasure to discover Da-End cabinet of curiosities : you’re immerged into the deepest mysteries and beauties of life and death…ringing skulls, flowers fading away as beautiful as alive, butterflies wings playing with light, a nativity transformed into a vanity…the list is not exhaustive , you have to visit it and better :  to experience it  !

Claire Morgan at Karsten Greve Gallery, Paris, until nov 3rd

Posted in art gallery, contemporary art, Paris on October 31, 2012 by ParisDeluxe&Arty

Hurry up if you don’t want to miss the great show of a rising young artist in le Marais area, until saturday ! She’s only 32 years old (from Ireland , living in London)and very impressive for her artistic maturity and mastering of different disciplines and techniques : drawing, sculpture,  installation, and taxidermy ! I’ve already told about her last year  (nov 18th) when she exhibited (with Erik Nissbicker by the way) in Conciergerie. Actually I’ve noticed her for the first time at La Fiac last year and I’m still mesmerized by her work  which transcends  images of death (birds and/or insects) through a formal and technical display- a real performance actually- that plays with perception and space. A work in the same time symbolic, esthetic, optical and filled with poetry based on  artistic qualities -nooo, it’s not  a bad word ! and a great rigour in the execution , which is according to me another rare quality today. Enough of cheap and anti-art ! Don’t be afraid by the title of the exhibition “Quietus” with underlying images of death,  and let’s celebrate the birth of a great artist, you will see her name everywhere very soon for sure.

Gaël Davrinche at Gallery Magda Danysz in Paris until june 16th

Posted in art gallery, contemporary art, Paris on May 29, 2012 by ParisDeluxe&Arty

I must say Gaël is one of my favorite figurative  artist in contemporary painting today for his knowledge of art history and his quality of painting : he’s such a great colorist with quite uneasy subject, avoiding always decorative or easy seduction . No trap, just Art !

My favorite series in this exhibition are the flowers, we could even say “Portaits of flowers” :  they have such a presence while fading away in a slow motion movement that looks like an elegant choreography, about to desappear in a sudden gust of wind…we can immediatly see how gorgeous they were during their splendour, nevertheless they keep in the degeneration process, thanks to a subtle richness of multiple hues, their past beauty.

Who’s afraid of Mona Lisa ?

Not Gaël for sure ! he dared to pay ironic tributes (that demonstrates actually his devotion to old masters ) to this iconic lady, echoing itself another famous irreverent hommage by Marcel Duchamp.

Lux Perpetua at Kamel Mennour until may 26th

Posted in art gallery, contemporary art, Paris with tags , , on May 11, 2012 by ParisDeluxe&Arty

Let’s talk about contemporay art today with my favorite group show right now in 6th district at Kamel Mennour gallery : Lux Perpetua. “Light, which cannot exist without space and time, is the stuff of  artists, who battle daily in order to keep the spark of creation alive. For art remains a beacon shining in the night, a glimmer in the shadows. A shroud of the immortals; a funereal splendour. ” This  first group show ever organized by the gifted -and very charming- gallerist is truly successfull : the selection of pieces and their hanging create a dialog that is just perfect ! Admire the voluptous black waves of Soulages near Legray sea-scape at night  facing the 3D light space installation by Morellet : “m’illumino d’immenso” ! as says Alfredo Jarr and even wrote it in neon light in a room near Anish Kapoor and Ann-Veronica Janssens.

My favorite room is the one with Dan Flavin colored neon light enhancing and responding to Delacroix  radiant Othello and Desdemona,-so venitian- a true masterpiece  where the fire of passion is consuming the lover. ..

Next to the Romantic Master, Mohamed Bourouissa young promising artist – already in Pinault foundation- seems to invert the role in his composed scene, inspired by Carravaggio. I would love to speak about all the exhibition since I liked it from the beginning : I mean before you get inside the gallery, when you arrive in the courtyard, a cercle of light falls on you with Michel Verjux, while Kounellis signature is burning and Morellet winks at you from the top of the majestic architecture…

Hurry up art lovers, this perfect show ends may 26th !

Thanks to Kamel Mennour gallerry for Delacroix and Mohamed Bourouissa pictures
